When Colours Whisper to the Heart: Understanding Colour Theory
“Neela Vaana Odayil…” (Tamil song from the movie Vazhve Maayam)
The moment we hear those words, our minds begin to paint a picture: a blue sky, a cool breeze, and a peaceful evening. Before we even understand the song, the colour has already touched our hearts.
Then comes another beautiful memory.
“Neelaakasham Peelivirikkum Pacha Thengola…”
Suddenly, we see a bright blue sky, green coconut trees, and blooming red roses. We don’t need a painting. We don’t need a photograph. Our imagination does all the work.
That is the power of colours.
They don’t knock on our hearts. They quietly enter, create emotions, and leave behind beautiful memories. Long before words speak, colours have already told their story.
I never believed colours had such power.
As a young graphic designer, I loved typography, layouts, and illustrations. To me, colours were just the final layer before sending a design to the client.
One afternoon, my manager walked over to my desk with an interesting challenge.
“I have a small experiment for you,” my manager said. “Create three advertisements for this biscuit. Keep the headline and product image exactly as they are. The only thing I want you to change is the colour scheme.”
I smiled.
“That’s easy,” I thought.
I created the first poster using bright red and yellow.
The second one was filled with shades of blue and white.
The third had green and earthy colours.
The next morning, the team gathered for feedback.
Something unexpected happened.
“The red one looks exciting.”
“The blue one feels premium.”
“The green one looks healthy.”
Everyone described the same product differently.
I was confused.
“Everything is exactly the same,” I replied. “Only the colours are different.”
My manager smiled.
“Yes… but the feeling isn’t.”
That day, I couldn’t stop thinking about those words.
I couldn’t understand how a simple shift in colour could completely change the story people saw in the very same biscuit.
At that moment, I realised I wasn’t simply selecting colours. I was shaping the emotions people would feel before they even read the advertisement.
I was choosing emotions.
That curiosity changed the way I looked at every advertisement from that day onward.
I opened my desktop computer and started reading about colours. Back then, I didn’t have a laptop. Every article I read uncovered another layer. I slowly realised that colours weren’t there simply to make a design attractive. They quietly shaped how people felt before they even read a single word. They were silent storytellers.
Researchers have found that our eyes respond to colour almost instantly, long before our minds begin processing the text in front of us.
Even before we read a headline or recognise a logo, our eyes have already reacted to its colours. Our first impression is often painted, not written.
Suddenly, everything started making sense.
Coca-Cola didn’t become famous because of its logo alone. Its bold red speaks of excitement and energy. Even before you notice the logo, the colour catches your eye.
IBM chose blue for a different reason.
Blue feels dependable. It quietly tells us, “You can trust me.” That is exactly what banks and technology companies want us to feel.
Starbucks wrapped itself in green.
Green reminds us of nature, freshness, and peace. It makes a cup of coffee feel warm, relaxing, and comforting.
Cadbury proudly wears purple.
Purple has always been associated with royalty and luxury. A simple chocolate suddenly feels like a premium treat.
I smiled and asked myself,
“So… which colour is the best?”
The answer was simple.
“There is no best colour. There is only the right colour for the right story.”
That answer changed the way I looked at design forever.
A song stays with us because of the emotions it creates, not just the lyrics. Brands are remembered for the same reason. They make us feel something beyond a logo.
Every unforgettable brand, just like every unforgettable love story, begins with a feeling.
And every beautiful feeling begins with the right colour.
